B3B: Fred Van Hove/ Wilbert de Joode / Barry Guy

Fred Van Hove (piano), Wilbert de Joode (double bass), Barry Guy (double bass)

Three shrewd musicians together in an equally unusual and adventurous combination.

Fred Van Hove (B, 1937) belongs to a select little group of musical pioneers who put the new improvised music on the world map in the sixties and seventies and has since then continued to reinvent musical forms of expression.

He formed part of the historic trio with Peter Brötzmann and Han Bennink, put together an endless series of pairs (Braxton, Mangelsdorff, Lacy...), and was the revolutionary force behind the Werkgroep Improviserende Musici (Working Group of Improvising Musicians) and the Free Music Festival. In the U.S. and Japan, he is invariably described as 'legendary' but in his own country he is all too rarely heard.

Barry Guy (UK, 1947) has been walking the fine line between composition and improvisation for over 40 years now. His interest extends from early music to improvised. He was a companion during the early days of Evan Parker, Derek Bailey & Co. and the man behind the impressive London Jazz Composers Orchestra, now
 theBarryGuyNewOrchestra.

In 1988 he played a prominent role in the historic festival with pianist Cecil Taylor in Berlin.

Wilbert de Joode (NL, 1955) is among the cream of the crop on the adventurous Amsterdam scene. He’s known to many as the permanent bassist of the ensembles of Michiel Braam, Ab Baars and Eric Boeren. The powerful and distinct sound of his bass (with gut strings) graced numerous international collaborations, including some with Ken Vandermark, and closer to home, Bart Maris.

All three are  known for their compelling solo concerts. Now Fred Van Hove has united them in this unique trio displaying an unprecedented abundance of strings.
